Editor's Note
The Quaternary Times is now online at the AMQUA WWW site (www.usu.edu/~amqua). If you prefer
the electronic version and do not want to receive future paper copies of the newsletter,
then please let me know.
In addition to the newsletter, the AMQUA WWW site now includes the Directory of North
American Quaternary Scientists. The Directory was originally edited and compiled by Steve
Porter (past AMQUA President) and published by Academic Press, Inc as the July 1995 issue
of Quaternary Research. The online version has been updated to include 1434 entries
that can be navigated through an alphabetical listing of last names, or the database can
be searched using the "find" command on your web browser. If your name is not in
the Directory, then please submit a copy of the Directory information form that appears at
the end of this newsletter or send me an e-mail message with the completed information so
that it can be added to future editions of the Directory. If you have ideas about other
items to add to the AMQUA home page, then please let me know.
Newsletter Deadlines
The regular deadlines for contributions to this newsletter are May 1st and November 1st.
To represent better the multidisciplinary scope of the Association, I am particularly
interested in receiving items that pertain to Quaternary Marine Geoprocesses,
Paleobiology, and Archaeology. Please send items (photographs please!) to me at:
Department of Geology, Utah State University, Logan, UT 84322-4505; fax: 801 797-1588; DKaufman@cc.usu.edu (preferred).

The Directory of North American Quaternary Scientist
The Directory of North American Quaternary Scientists is now accessible via the AMQUA WWW
site ( www.usu.edu/~amqua/directory).
The Directory was originally published by Academic Press, Inc as the July 1995 issue of Quaternary
Research (V44 (11). Compilation of the Directory was approved by the AMQUA Council in
1992 and it was published as a contribution to the XIV Congress of the International Union
for Quaternary Research (INQUA), which met in Berlin in August, 1995. As originally
conceived, the Directory was to include only scientists from the United States, but the
effort was subsequently broadened, with the help of the Canadian Quaternary Association
(CANQUA) and Quaternary scientists from Mexico, to encompass scientists from all of North
America.
The 1434 entries in the Directory can be navigated through an alphabetical listing of last
names, or it can be searched using the "find" command on your web browser. We
are presently working to make the directory searchable using routines available on the
server. In addition to the alphabetical listing, the Directory includes current business
or home addresses, and telephone; fax, and email addresses. Other optional entries include
each scientist's highest academic degree (school and year), scientific specialty, special
geographic expertise, and time frame(s) of particular interest.
Owing to the difficulty in identifying and contacting all potential listees, and the need
to obtain information in a limited time, we cannot claim that this Directory is all
inclusive. Nevertheless, it does list most active researchers resident in North America
who regard themselves as Quaternary scientists. The Directory includes active, employed
scientists, as well as a few retired but still-active Quaternary researchers. Enrolled
students were not included, except in cases where award of a graduate degree and
acceptance of employment preceded the Directory's compilation.
All corrections and additions sent to the Editor since the original publication and as of
November, 1996 have been added to the online version of the Directory. Every effort has
been made to ensure that entries are correct: all entries were proofed at least twice
after initial compilation. Nevertheless, given the scale of this project, some errors
likely remain. Any detected errors, as well as any changes subsequent to publication,
should be communicated to Darrell Kaufman, the Database Manager, via electronic mail, or
submitted on a copy of the Directory information form that appears elsewhere in this
newsletter, so that the database can be updated for future editions.
You can update your directory via this link
or from the directory.
We intend to add to the Directory the names of all professional members of AMQUA not
already included. If you are concerned about having your name and other information in the
AMQUA membership directory assessable through the online database, then please contact the
Database Manager. If you want to be sure that your name, plus the other optional
information that is not part of the AMQUA membership directory, is included in the updated
edition of the Directory of North American Quaternary Scientists, then please submit a
copy of the Directory information form to the Database Manager at: Geology Department,
Utah State University, Logan, UT 84322-4505; fax: 801-797 1588 or send an e-mail message
with the completed information to Dkaufman@cc.usu.edu.
The AMQUA and CANQUA councils hope that this North American Directory will motivate other
countries or multinational regions to embark on similar projects, so that eventually a
global directory will be available. Several countries have already begun such an effort.
Suggestions for improving the format or content of the Directory will be most welcome.

Dues Time Again
Yes, it is that time of year again: Your AMQUA dues may be about to go into arrears.
Check the mailing label on this newsletter. The number after your name is the year through
which your dues are paid. If the number is 95 or 96, it is time to contribute to the
treasury. Dues are $8/year for professionals and $4/year for students. Please pay your
dues in at least 3-year increments. This will save both time and money of contacting you
each year, inputting the data each year, acknowledging the receipt of the dues each year,
and your time to write a check each year. If you chose to pay by credit card, payment must
be a minimum of $24. There is a substantial charge for each card transaction and that
reduces the amount that goes into the treasury and that can be used for promoting
Quaternary studies.
For your convenience, a post-card reminder of dues payment has been inserted into this
newsletter for those of you who are about to be delinquent. Please fill out the
information requested on the post card and return it with your payment so that I can
update your file if necessary. For those of you who provide me with an e-mail address, I
will acknowledge receipt of the dues electronically. If you change your address, please
let me know so that you won't miss any of the exciting newsletters.
