Journals

Geoarchaeology: An International Journal
Geoarchaeology is published bimonthly and has a broad, interdisciplinary scope dealing with the understanding of archaeological sites, their natural context, and the material artifacts recovered from them. Manuscripts may include subjects from disciplines within the earth sciences (e.g., geography, pedology, climatology, geology, oceanography, geochemistry, geochronology, and geophysics) or those from biological sciences. The editors (Paul Goldberg and Ofer Bar-Yosef) are particularly interested in manuscripts that bear upon site-formation processes. They should be sent to: Paul Goldberg, Department of Archaeology, Boston University, 675 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA 02215; 617-353-3415; fax: -6800

Journal of Paleolimnology: Celebrating Ten Years Of Publication
With the release of the last issue of volume 18, the Journal of Paleolimnology reached another significant milestone of ten years of publication. Looking back at the last ten years, we are proud of the efforts that have been made by our authors, referees, and publishers to make this journal such a success. It has been an exciting and productive decade.

The steady expansion and diversification of paleolimnology behooves us to continue to evolve and expand aspects of  the journal to meet the challenges of the next millennium. Many of these changes are detailed in the lead editorial in the first issue of 1998. In summary, these new changes include:

Rapid Communications a new "fast track" section of the journal for select contributions.

A New Series of Invited Review Articles The D.G. Frey & E.S. Deevey Reviews

Expansion of World Wide Web Facilities at:http://www.umanitoba.ca/geoscience /paleolim/jopl.html In addition to our own journal WWW page, Kluwer Academic Publishers also offers a useful web site (www.wkap.nl), which includes additional information). The Kluwer WWW site also supports a search engine, where one can search past issues of the journal by submitting a key word or author. All these services are free of charge. The special, much-reduced personal subscription rate is also available again for 1998 (contact John Smol at SMOLJ@ Biology.QueensU.Ca). We also plan to collate a subject and author index in 1998 (covering the first 20 volumes of the journal), and considerable expansion in the area of electronic publishing is also coming. If you have any questions or comments regarding the journal, please contact one of the co-editors: John Smol, Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL) Department of Biology, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario K7L 3N6 Canada; 613-545-6147; fax: 6617; SMOLJ@BIOLOGY.QueensU.Ca William Last, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 2N2 Canada; 204-474-8361; fax: -7623; MLAST@ MS.UManitoba.Ca

Quaternary Science Reviews
The publication of Quaternary Science Reviews (16:6, 1997) sees the introduction of some small changes designed to make the journal more focused and prepare the way for future developments. An initiative has been taken to include authoritative views from Quaternary scientists regarding issues of current, or potentially future importance. In this issue Mark Maslin and Andre Berger have reported the views of Willi Dansgaard and Nick Shackleton on critical priorities for Quaternary science. These views were expressed at the conference on "Climate and Ozone at the Dawn of the Third Millennium" organized under the auspices of the European Union in Brussels, 1996. QSR 16:8 will include the view of Wally Broecker on "Future Directions of Palaeoclimate Research.
