Desert Research Institute Jonathan Davis Award
The Quaternary Sciences Center of the Desert Research Institute awarded the 1999 J.O.
Davis scholarship to Cheryl Fontaine (University of Nevada, Reno) for her PhD research on

Basin." DRI also recognized Leah Bondstead (University of Nevada, Reno) for her MS

Jonathan O. Davis, a prominent Quaternary geologist and geoarchaeologist was tragically
killed in an auto accident in December, 1990. The family and friends of Jonathan
established an endowment which provides monies for the scholarship, which is given
annually to support field research of a graduate student working on the Quaternary geology
of the Great Basin or surrounding areas. The award will be $2,000.
Geochemical Society's Patterson Award
R. Lawrence Edwards will receive the Geochemical Society's Patterson Award for his
contribution to the study of surface processes at the Goldschmidt Conference in August.
Larry was instrumental in developing the U/Th disequilibrium TIMS dating method which is
allowing speleothem records to be dated absolutely to about 500,000 years. His work has
contributed significantly to Quaternary science.
Julian Szeicz Memorial Scholarship

respected biogeographer and award-winning teacher who was tragically killed doing
fieldwork in 1998. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a fourth-year honours
