The Quaternary Times Next AMQUA Biennial Meeting The faculty and students of the Interdisciplinary Environmental Dynamics PhD Program at the University of Arkansas are pleased to host the 16th Biennial meeting of the American Quaternary Association in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The theme is "Landscape and Biotic Responses to Climate Variability: Future Impacts and Past Lessons". Poster presentations on all Quaternary-related topics are solicited from members and interested attendees. Rationale: Present and future changes in climate variability and their
associated environmental impacts is a topic of scientific debate, as well as public
concern. Talks and discussion at the next biennial meeting will focus on the nature and
cause of climate variability in recent millennia; the geomorphic, biotic, and hydrologic
response to past changes in climate variability; and the likely impact of future climate
changes on human, biotic, and physical systems. Venue: The meeting will be at the Continuing Education Center, downtown Fayetteville, attached to the Hilton Hotel. Housing will be available both in motels and in more economically-priced air-conditioned dorm rooms at the University. The University of Arkansas is located in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas. The scenery is lovely and the University is within a one hour drive of the Buffalo National River, the Ozark National Forest, and Beaver Lake. A new regional airport is served by several major airlines. Interstate 540 is now open, connecting Fayetteville with I-40 to the south. I-44 is about 60 miles north of Fayetteville. Schedule: The Registration Mixer will be Sunday evening May 21st and the sessions will be May 22-24, 2000. The casual "banquet" will be at the Ozark Mountain Smokehouse where smoked meats, brew, and wine are the specialties. Field Trips and Short Course: Field trips around Arkansas and the surrounding states and a short course on GIS will be offered before and after the meeting. One-day trips on Sunday May 21 include: (1) Archeology sites along the Buffalo River as seen by canoe, led by Marvin Kay. (2) Old-growth forest and environmental issues in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma, led by David Stahle. (3) Hydrogeology and environmental issues in a karst terrain in northwest Arkansas, lead by Van Brahana. A multi-day, post-meeting trip to Crowley's Ridge and the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, a story of wind and water, will be led by Moye Rutledge Information: A circular with additional information, application forms for
travel grants, and registration and abstract forms will be sent to all members and will be
posted to the AMQUA web site. Travel grants will be competitively awarded to students who
present posters at the meeting. For more information, or to request an circular if you are
not a member, please contact meeting Chairperson, Peggy Guccione; 501-575-3354;
