The AMQUA Next Generation Award

The AMQUA Next Generation Award recognizes North American early-career Quaternary scientists who demonstrate committed and creative leadership in advancing inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in science. AMQUA honors recipients for their contributions to improving the culture of our field and fostering equitable access to and participation in science.

Awardees will be emerging leaders who have made an impact at their home institutions or beyond, through contributions that may include but are not limited to: advocacy work within home institutions or scientific societies, enhancing community-building, support or safety for underrepresented scientists, published scholarship or writing on diversity in science, scientific opportunities provided to underrepresented youth, or meaningful engagement with Indigenous/local communities at research study sites.

Applications: Eligible applicants are current graduate students, or have received their PhDs or equivalent terminal degree within ten years of the award date. (Duration from degree may be extended by the number of years taken for parental, caregiving, or personal/medical leave.) Membership in AMQUA is not required but applications should be based at a North American institution or conducting research focused on North America. Applications and nominations are both welcome, and should include: up-to-date CV (no page limit); a statement (not to exceed two pages) describing leadership in advancing inclusion, diversity, equity, and/or access in science – including goals, activities and any key outcomes thus far (for example, numbers of participants or changes made to department policies); and (for self-applications) name, title/affiliation, email address and phone number of two referees who can speak to the applicant’s leadership. Referees may be mentors, collaborators, community partners, etc. All applicants are retained as candidates for three years (two award cycles).  Award recipient will be announced prior to and will be recognized at the 2024 AMQUA Biennial meeting in August of 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and will receive a monetary prize.  Please submit applications/nominations to AMQUA secretary Colin Long at longco@uwosh.edu by April 22, 2024.
